Alyscamps, Vincent Van Gogh

Alyscamps is an ancient Roman Necropolis located near Arles’ town centre.  Vincent visited here with Gauguin and painted four canvases depicting the autumn hues of the poplar trees along ‘Lover’s Lane’.

This part of Arles was a popular strolling spot for young courting couples, who walked past the tall poplars en route to the ancient Romanesque chapel.  The figures in Vincent and Gauguin’s paintings offer a glimpse of leisure and love among ordinary people in this city, famous all over France for the beauty of its youth.
