The Circus Maximus stood right at the foot of Rome’s Palatine Hill, allowing easy access for the Emperor from the Imperial Palace.
Here, all sections of Roman society would come to witness thrilling chariot races, united by the spectacle, but divided by their loyalty to different teams – the Reds, Whites, Blues or Greens.
Today,
visitors can witness the incredible scale of the Circus Maximus, the largest
public building the Romans ever made, and stand where the chariots ran, or where
the massed crowds cheered for their favourite riders.
