Krak
de Chevaliers is a huge Crusader Castle standing stop a tall massif. The castle was built in the 1140s, during a
time when Christian soldiers were attempting to wrest the Holy Land from Muslim
control.
It
was given to the Hospitallers, who were a knightly military-religious order
that both provided health care to the Christian poor and waged bloody wars of
conquest against the Muslims in the Levant.
Though
it cuts a dominating figure, the castle does contain some beautiful frescoes
that help soften its austere, militaristic image.
