Tinturn Abbey, Wales Coast Path

This partly ruined and roofless abbey once belonged to the Cistercian monks.

Tintern Abbey prospered under the patronage of local lords and was transformed from a simple wooden structure to one of the most striking masterpieces of medieval Gothic architecture in the UK.

When Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries, the abbey was quickly abandoned.  It was rediscovered centuries later by poets, especially Wordsworth, who penned a famous poem about the abbey’s beautiful presence in the Wye Valley.
