Three Sisters Wilderness, Pacific Crest

The Three Sisters are a striking trio of closely spaced volcanic peaks in the Cascade Range, each soaring over 10,000 feet (3,000 meters).  Named South, Middle, and North Sister, they rank as the 3rd, 4th and 5th highest peaks in Oregon.  These majestic mountains experience heavy snowfall and dramatic seasonal temperature shifts, making them both beautiful and challenging for climbers and adventurers.

While North and Middle Sister have remained dormant for over 14,000 years and are unlikely to erupt again, South Sister is a different story.  Its last eruption occurred around 2,000 years ago, and scientists believe it remains an active volcano.

A tectonic uplift detected in 2000 has led to increased monitoring of the peak.  Despite its volcanic nature, South Sister is home to several glaciers and Oregon’s highest lake, Teardrop Pool, nestled within its summit crater.
