As any
primary school student studying the water cycle will tell, oxbow lakes are
formed when a bend in a meandering river is isolated as a result of the river
changing course. In Amazonia, these
pretty-crescent-shaped lakes are very common, their placid waters attracting a
great variety of wildlife.
They are
a sanctuary, especially for the rather odd-looking giant river otters and
surprisingly cute little caimans, who take advantage of the huge numbers of
fish found in these waters.
