Whilst the opera may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Amazon, here at Teatro Amazonas, enthusiasts of the art can get their cultural fix.
This a reminder of when Manaus was boomtown, full of rich patrons eager to enjoy the fruits of old European culture. When profits from the rubber trade dwindled, they packed up and left.
But
now, after 90 years, the Teatro is back up and running and strains of Puccini
or Handel are caried across the jungle canopy once again.
