UNO
City represents a blend of modern architecture and cultural landmarks,
contributing to Vienna’s dynamic skyline.
On
the northern bank of the Danube River lies UNO City, a modern office complex
that houses the United Nations Office. The
striking feature of the complex is its distinct Y-shape. A series of high- and lo-rise towers are arranged
in a fan shape, with their curved facades designed to face the Danube River.
Completed
in 1979, the complex is a mix of glass, steel, and concrete, with large windows
that allow plenty of natural light and create a sense of openness The design
reflects a modern, sleep aesthetic with clean lines and minimalistic details
reminiscent of the era.
The
central part of the complex, surrounded by the towers, is a large open public
space. Nearby, the Scholars Pavilion
stands as a monument gifted by Iran to the United Nations Office. The pavilion houses statues of four renowned
Iranian medieval scholars – Omar Khayyam, Al-Biruni, Rhazes and Avicenna
(Ibn-e-Sina) – celebrating Iran’s historical contributions to science and
knowledge.
To
the east of UNO City, the DC tower rises dramatically against the skyline. Standing at 720ft (220m), it is the tallest building
in Austria. Visible for miles, this
sleek black skyscraper with its reflective glass façade gleams in the sunlight making
it one of the most iconic modern landmarks in the city.
The Reichsbrucke Bridge crosses the Danube, connecting UNO City to Vienna’s centre, offering a distinct shift from the contemporary to the historical. H river serves as a natural divide, separating the sleek, moder architecture of the northern bank from the city’s distinguished heritage
