Munich’s
Englischer Garten is inspired by the English philosophy of park landscaping,
replacing the rose beds and gravel paths of formal gardens with an imitation of
the romantically imagined countryside.
The park
has stretching meadows with swimming ponds, wooded glades of ancient trees
where sparkling streams run and little hills dotted with civic monuments. It offers a welcome respite from the city’s
rush – a place to plonk down on the soft, bouncy grass and listen to the
birdsong.
