Sakaori Terraced Rice, Nakasendo

The Sakaori Terraced Rice fields in Nakanoho are nestled between two mountains.  Built during the Edo period, they are more than 400 years old.  The terraces were bult using advanced stone masonry and they spread out in the shape of a fan.

To maintain the traditional landscape, locals have taken great pains to improve their roads and provide easier access to the fields.  In 1999 it was certified as one of the “100 Best Rice Terraces in Japan.
