Marajo Island lies in the Amazon Delta, where the Amazon River meets the Atlantic Ocean. It’s the world’s largest river island and is a great place to experience the unique pororoca phenomenon.
Characterised
by a heart-stopping roar, this tidal bore seemingly reverses the laws of the
universe, causing water from the Atlantic to flow upstream. It is especially popular with daring surfers
who ride the ensuing waves, challenging the Atlantic and the Amazon at once.
