Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Continental Railroad

The orange carriages of a heritage train chug noisily through a stunning mountain pass.  At its head is a black iron locomotive, with its friendly rounded front and chimney billowing steam.  This is the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, which has been operating here since 1882.  Originally built to transport gold and silver mined in these mountains, today, it’s a popular heritage attraction.

The ride is breathtaking.  The carriages hug the cliffs, winding through the steep canyons and past the quick-flowing meltwater rivers.  The branches of pines brush the carriages as they chug along, and, as the train winds through the mountain passes, the vista changes from minute to minute, always breathtaking.
