Avenue of Baobabs, Madagascar

The Avenue of Baobabs, situated near the town of Morondava in western Madagascar, is one of the most iconic and awe-inspiring natural landscapes on the planet.

Imagine walking for half a mile (800m) between towering, ancient baobabs, their massive trunks and spindly branches stretching toward the sky.  Some of these trees are over a thousand years old, surviving quietly as the environment around them continues to evolve and change.

These “upside-down” trees, with their bulbous shapes, thrive in the arid soil of the region.  Their smooth, grey bark and massive silhouettes create an otherworldly scene, especially at sunrise or sunset when the golden light floods the landscape, casting long shadows across the red dirt road.  It’s an ethereal sight and an incredible opportunity for photography, the kind of place where every angle feels like it belongs in a gallery.
