Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, Continental Divide

Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area is a hotspot for the adventurous, the outdoorsy, and those who enjoy spending their holidays in a tent, eating instant noodles.  This large area of deep valleys, winding rivers and pristine forests is home to over 45 campsites.  It is the perfect place year-round for outdoor pursuits.

The area was named by explorer John Wesley Powell in 1869 for the strong red colour of the sandstone cliffs that tower over the Green River.  Powell rowed down the river on his expedition in ‘bul boats’, traditional Native American crafts made of tanned buffalo hides stretched over a willow frame.  Today’s visitors follow in his wake, piloting kayaks and canoes down the placid waters of the Green River.
