In days gone by, when young Welsh men returned from the field, they would pass the long winter nights carving wooden spoons as gifts for their girlfriends.
These are lovespoons, an old craft in which symbols of devotion (a twisted stem for togetherness, a Celtic knot for everlasting love) are intricately carved into the handle of spoon.
This
tradition lives on and it is still common for the bride of a Welshman to be
presented with a lovespoon on her wedding day.
