Cenote Ik-Kil, Chichen Itza

This magical cenote lies in a patch of jungle near the ruins of Chichen Itza.  Waterfalls splash happily into the clear waters, illuminated beautifully by the filtered light.

Vines, garlanded with sweet-smelling flowers, hang down into the pit.

Though considered sacred by the Mayans, swimmers now splash in the cenote’s waters, enjoying the cooling waters after a sweaty hike through the steaming jungle.
