Sinaia Monastery, Transylvania

Founded in 1695, this Byzantine-style monastery was named after its builder, a nobleman, took a pilgrimage to Mount Sinai in Egypt.

Graceful arches, decorated with pots of flowers embellish the exterior and wondrously fluted and carved columns support the structure.  Inside vibrant frescoes abound.

The original bell was the hiding place of the church’s valuables during a Turkish raid but has now been replaced with a much larger bell weighing an amazing 3,700lb (1,700kg).
