The Mormon Rocks are a unique group of rock formations in the Cajon Pass of Southern California. Mae of sandstone and other materials, they have been shaped over millions of years by natural forces. The distinctive appearance of the Mormon Rocks is due to the erosion of soft, sedimentary rock layer.
As
wind and water wore away the softer parts of the rock, the harder, more
resistant layers were left behind, creating the prominent formations visible today. This natural landmark was named after the
Mormon Trail, an important route used by Mormon settlers in the 1800s as they
travelled west. With their striking
appearance, the formations became an easy landmark for travellers to recognize.
