Lake Biwa, Nakasendo

The striking Shairahige ShrineTorii sits within Japan’s largest body of fresh water, Lake Biwa.

It was here on a moonlit night that the world’s first novel, The Tale of Genji, was being written by Murasaki Shikibuin the 11th century. Ukimoro Hall at the end of the pier is a place of worship, praying for the safety of lake travellers.
