Nijo Castle was built over 25 years in the early 1600s, beginning with the first shogun, Tokugawa leyasu and finished by this grandson.
The castle was the shogunate’s stronghold for 250 years until it ceded power to the Imperial Court.
In
1939 the castle was donated to Kyoto and opened to the public. In 1994, the castle was inscribed on the
World Heritage List.
