Sanctuary Caraca, Estrada Real

Set amidst a formal garden in the hills of Serra do Caraca is the tranquil location of the Sanctuary Caraca.  Founded in 1744 as a guesthouse for pilgrims, today it is an inn with access to the local nature reserve.

The highlight at the sanctuary is the caretaker’s nightly feeding of the maned wolves, the largest canines in South America.  It allows guests to observe these shy creatures that look more like foxes with long legs than wolves.
