In 1911, Edward Lutyens was charged with designing a new capital for the British Raj, the colonial rulers of India. From his vision, this grand quarter of New Delhi was born.
Using
the imposing forms of neo-classicism but swapping European decoration for
indigenous Mughal and Hindu motifs and white Mediterranean marble for the soft
browns and reds of local sandstone, the unique architectural landscape includes
the Rashtrapati Bhavan, which is currently the official residence of the
President.
