Bedecked in mesmerizing green, golds, blues and reds, the birds of the Yucatan jungle are so colourful they seem like the jewels of a Mayan king come to life.
In
fact, The Mayans were just as enamoured with the jungle’s feathered inhabitants
as the telescopic-camera toting birders of today; go to just the right spot at
the Temple of Kukulcan and clap, you will hear a chorus of birdsong, mimicking
the voice of the Quetzal bird, sacred to the Mayans as god of the air.
