Perched on the shores of Lake Batur, Purah Ulun Danu Batu is the primary water temple on Bali.
Built in the 18th Century, it is believed to be on the site from which all reivers and springs on the island originate. This imbues the building with a practical and spiritual purpose as it is central to the island’s Subak irrigation system, which combines religious ritual, democratic management and ecology to ensure the success of the year’s rice crop.
The
large and impressive temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is a testament to its importance to the religious
lives and livelihood of the island’s rice farmers and is particularly impressive
during dusk, when all the animals that make the rice paddies and lakes home
come out.
