The Walls of Lugo, Camino Santiago

The town of Lugo is girdled by imposing defensive walls.  Built by the Romans in the 3rd century, they seem completely impenetrable even today.  Yet formidable as its walls are, Lugo has been unlucky – after the Roman empire lost its ability to defend its long borders in the 5th century, Lugo was sacked no less than five times by a variety of marauding tribes.

Today, the walls serve a far more congenial purpose, being a spot for the families of Lugo to take evening walks along the battlements.
