Referred to as the Caribbean of the Amazon, Alter do Chao is a charming riverside town best known for its beautiful Ilha do Amor (Island of Love), a large spit protruding in the river and its white sandy beaches.
The town is bordered by the Tapajos River, a major tributary of the Amazon River, to the west and Lago Verde to the east. Visitors come to relax beneath colourful beach umbrellas, take a dip in the cool river or explore the lagoon on a canoe or stand-up paddleboard.
