At Buckfast Abbey, a more contemplative life is lived – one of labour and prayer, tending to flower beds and raising bees. In particular, the world-famous (at least among beekeepers) Buckfast Bee.
Bred
by the ingenious brother Adam in 1898 to develop a breed of bees able to
withstand the deadly Isle of Wight epidemic that was responsible for wiping out
hives all across Europe, the bee has become the pride of the brothers here ever
since.
