Once, the most dangerous place for an Anglo-Saxon to live was the Welsh border. The untameable hill people of those valleys would routinely cross over to raid their neighbours.
To defend his lands, the Saxon king Offa built this dyke, a huge earthwork rampart. For centuries this formed the border between the English and the Welsh.
It’s still here, spanning much of the length of Wales and has become a popular walking trail for hikers from both sides of the border and beyond.
