Pura Dalem Ubud, Bali, Challenge Completed!

The Pura Daelm Ubud is known as the Temple of Death and is dedicated to the demon queen Rangda.  The tiered temple is full of terrifying sculptures, snarling lions, demons with lolling tonques and crossed eyes, and grimacing nagas.

Rangda is a central figure in the island’s mythology.  The reincarnation of a powerful Javanese witch, she represents evil (adharma) and chaos.

Her enemy is the celestial panther Barong, a sort of Balinese Aslan, who leads the forces of good.

The Balinese recreate their epic struggle in the Barong dance which is often performed in the temple’s courtyard.

This was a quick challenge while waiting for my usual team members to complete their Madagascar challenge.  I was fascinated with the mythology surrounding this Island's beliefs and practices.

- 50 miles of indoor cycling and steps, finished on a family vacation at Huntington Beach
