Mathura and Vrindavan are important
cities for Hindus.
It
is believed that Lord Krishna was born here and that the ethereal music of his
flute can still sometimes be heard in the wind. The cities are, hence, popular
places of pilgrimage during the Holi Festival.
During
Holi, revellers playfully throw coloured power at each other and the women of
the town dress as milkmaids and chase the men with sticks, recreating the tale
of milkmaids driving off Krisna when he came to the town.
