Flume Gorge, nestled within Franconia Notch State Park, is a striking natural wonder. Spanning 800ft (240m), the gorge is framed by towering granite walls that rise as high as 90ft (27m). Over thousands of years, Flume Brook has carved this dramatic landscape, with its rushing waters continuing to shape the rock. A highlight of the gorge is the Flume Covered Bridge, gracefully spanning over the brook, along with the stunning Avalanche Falls.
North
of the gorge, the Sentinel Pine Covered Bridge stretches 60ft (18m) across the Pemigewasset
River. Built in 1939 and named after a
massive pine tree that once stood like a sentinel above the river, the tree’s
remnants were used as the main support for the bridge after it fell in a hurricane. For those intrigued by UFO lore, a nearby
highway marker commemorates the infamous 1961 alien abduction encounter of
Betty and Barney Hill. It was the first
UFO abduction report in the U.S., where the couple allegedly lost two hours of
their time.
